To tie or not to tie?

The One Show Team | 18:04 UK time, Monday, 6 April 2009

The necktie has long been associated with dressing smartly. The tie was, and sometimes still is, seen as essential office attire or formal wear for men.

The phrase like "old school tie" still conjures up a whole series of associations of privilege and exclusivity, just from the colours on a strip of cloth.

But fast forward to the present day and ties seem to be becoming less and less popular.

Tie sales are reportedly down from a decade ago, and some doctors have even suggested they are detrimental to our health. Open collars abound!

Some might argue that a tie offers a point of difference, a chance for people to say something about their own personality. In a business world dominated by black and grey suits, some might see their tie as a sign of individuality.

So, what do you think? To tie or not to tie? Are neckties best left in the past? Or are they here to stay? Have your say here.
