Pietersen rising to Richards challenge?

Martin Gough | 17:50 UK time, Thursday, 15 March 2007

Martin GoughSt Lucia - Everyone turned up at England training on Thursday morning to cast an eye over Jimmy Anderson, but they paid the price if they didn鈥檛 keep an eye on Kevin Pietersen.

Anderson is this week鈥檚 injury doubt, leading up to England鈥檚 World Cup opener against New Zealand, and that doubt persisted into another day as he got through an extensive fitness test, reportedly 鈥渨ithout discomfort鈥.

That鈥檚 not what it looked like from the boundary edge, as the view through my binoculars showed him fiddling regularly with the strapping around the fractured knuckle on the little finger of his right hand.

Under the watchful eyes of physio Dean Conway and team doctor Mark Wotherspoon, Anderson bowled for about two overs in the middle at the Beausejour Stadium, gradually increasing his pace until his looked close to flat-out.

He took fielding practice, although he tried whenever possible to catch with his left hand. While his throwing wasn鈥檛 of the exocet style demonstrated by team-mate Paul Collingwood, it wasn鈥檛 too shabby.

Anderson wielded the bat a little, too, although that is unlikely to be needed unless England are so deep in trouble that it will make little difference.

The short practice session that England favour on the eve of a big game looked to be over, until word came to those standing on the boundary edge to take cover.

Kevin Pietersen had clearly decided he needed to practice clubbing balls into the top tier of the pavilion and he proceeded to do so with regularity.

Whether it was heading our way or not the difficulty in spotting the white ball against the brilliant blue sky saw observers ducking for cover any time a ball went airborn.

Perhaps KP had been reading this morning鈥檚 local newspaper, The Star, in which Caribbean great Sir Viv Richards outlines the details of his Six Sixes competition, run with the help of the tournament鈥檚 official whisky.

I bet you didn鈥檛 know the World Cup had an official whisky.

鈥淚f [Chris] Gayle or other candidates like Kevin Pietersen, Andrew Flintoff, Mahendra Singh Dhoni or Shahid Afridi hit six sixes in any over during this World Cup, Johnnie Walker will give a million US dollars to charity,鈥 says the Master Blaster.

Only Sir Garfield Sobers and Ravi Shastri have ever managed the feat in first-class cricket and no one has ever done it in a one-day international but Sir Viv reckons the short boundaries in this competition offer a great opportunity.

One of Richards鈥 candidates had no idea about the prize. When asked, Flintoff said: 鈥淚t鈥檚 not something I鈥檓 eyeing up to be honest.鈥

His team mate Pietersen may have other ideas.

Once again you are all very quick to put a lot of hope on KP... I don't suppose he'll be able to do it all on his own. i'd rather win the cup than th 6 6es competition... but both will do nicely .

Why is it that England are likely to take a chance
on Anderson when they have fit bowlers available , we have done this before and it naerly always fails.

There is no doubt that the advent of the 20-20 Moer n Soek, (Hit and Look), cricket has increased the ammount of sixes hit in the 50 over version. Last Friday at the Bullring, (Wanderers) in Joberg 22 sixes were hit in the Lions v Titans 20-20 game, three consequtive ones off one unlucky Titan spinner. I doubt if the 6*6 challenge will be met during this World Cup, even against the non test palying nations. But I am sure that the tournamnet record for sixes will be beaten, and hopefully KP and Freddy will be at the top of the list.

Can this include no balls? My tip is Dwayne Leverock to do it off a Mohammed Sami 17 ball special. You heard it here first.
