Younus sets up magnificent win

Kamlesh Purohit | 08:21 UK time, Friday, 9 November 2007

The series is now wonderfully set up after a superb century from Man of the Match Younus Khan's masterly 117 off 110 balls formed the backbone of in Mohali.

But despite the victory, there will be one big worry in the minds of Shoaib Malik and Geoff Lawson.

Pakistan's new-ball pair, Shoaib Akhtar and Umar Gul, bowled with real fire on a wicket providing pace and bounce, but for the second match running, none of the other bowlers provided able support.

How they could have done with an in-form Sami, Razzaq or Naved because it looked at one stage as though they would be chasing a target of 350-plus.

India's total of 321 could, and perhaps should, have been bigger and they will look back on the match as a missed opportunity. Apart from Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar, no other batsman was able to grab the initiative, despite decent knocks from Yuvraj and Sehwag.

Credit must go to Malik’s captaincy for bringing Gul on to get rid of both Tendulkar and Gambhir, and later Tanvir to account for Yuvraj and Uthappa in the same over.

Sachin Tendulkar

After the loss of Sourav Ganguly in the first over, Tendulkar and Gambhir laid a great foundation with a superb partnership of 173 for the second wicket.

Gambhir played some fine shots in his 57, but it was the 'Little Master' who was in dominant form, producing some sparkling footwork, whether clipping a four off his legs or smashing a six over deep extra cover.

If any knock deserved a hundred, this was it – alas though, it wasn’t to be, and he was caught behind for 99 looking to guide the ball down to third man for the single.

, and his crucial partnership with Misbah-ul-Haq (49) kept their team in the game when it looked for all the world that it was slipping away.

The pair put on 102 for the fifth wicket and despite the required rate exceeding 10 runs per over at one stage, they paced the chase perfectly, and set the stage for Shahid Afridi to finish things off with a few lusty blows.

The 200 or so Pakistani fans who managed to get visas to cross the Wagah border to watch the match will feel the journey was worth the hours of waiting at the crossing while their papers were cleared.

And now at one game all with three to play, the circus moves on to Kanpur, where organisers will be hoping for another contest as thrilling as this one.

How fitting - that what has been described as a toothless batting line up - can play so magnificently - and now what a series!

The annoying thing for me in Britain is that I can't watch this without paying more than my licence fee, or a basic Sky subscription - no highlights on the Beeb, or Geo, or Star - come on, this is what we want to see - not endless analyses of the political situation in Pakistan, thats a mess and we all know it!

I still think that Pakistan will lose the ODI series, but 3-2 would be better that 5-0 or 4-1, especially in India, and bring on the Test series, where Inshallah, Pakistan will reign supreme!

IT WAS SUCH A GR8 EXAPMLE OF TEAM EFFORT BY PAKISTAN AGAINST ANY OPPONENT TO CHASE A BIG TOTAL OF 322 AFTER BEING IN TROUBLE HAVING RUN RATE OF JUST 4.84 IN FIRST 20 OVERS.

THOUGH PAKISTAN WIN DAT GAME BUT STILL YOUSAF'S STAMP OUT IS SUSPECIOUS.......
HOW CUD U EXPECT SUCH A GR8 BATSMAN COMING DOWN THE PITCH TO JUST BEAT THE BALL LETING THE KEEPER FOR EAZY STUPMING.....

WEL.....GR8 KNOCK BY MISBAH...BUT AGAIN UNFORTUNATE 2 PLAY ALMOST SAME SHORT AS WAS IN 20/20 FINAL....LOLZ

1)

2)
WOT ABT 3RD MAN N FINE LEG FIELDING ....INDIAN TEAM GOT MOST OF RUNS IN THESE AREAS N V JUST GOT THERE INDIAN FIRLDERS TO SAVE OUR RUNS IN DA SAME AREAZ????

3)
WOT IS WRONG WID RAO ANJUM??? IS NO ONE THERE TO TELL HIM DAT HE IS A GUD LENGTH N PACER BALLER. IF HE BALLS THE SAME HE'S JUST LIKE M. ASIF, SHAUN POLLOK N WUD B GUD ENOUGH YESTERDAY. U CAN C DA DIFFERENCE IN IRFAN PATHAN...WHO DID THE SAME IN FIRST 6 OVERS.

Iagreewith the author, beside Akhtar and Gul, there is little left to strenghten the bollowing attack. Too many extras and ordinary fielding will also not help the cause, Pakistan have to work on its fielding. A better performance by the batting line up especially Younas Khan. As for as India is concerned, they didnt capitalized on the start they got from Sachin and Ghambhir. Now that the series is equally poised i am eager that wat will happen on sunday, regardless of who ever wins, i expect some great cricket to watch in the upcomming matches.

If they do not do now then when?. Even players like Dhoni and Yuvraj are not consistant with their play. Kalmesh,

I don’t understand how you rate Younis' century as equally memorable as Tendulkar's. Fact: Younis contribution helped achieve a win for Pak and Tendulkar's contribution didn’t. Criticism should go to Tendy for having shifted focus on to his own personal achievements rather than playing for his team. When Tendy lost his wicket, the Indian innings lost its momentum. Everyone agrees India should’ve scored in excess of 350. The quicker India let go of Tendy, the more likely they are to find new talent to win games in the future.

Pak's bowling and captaincy was awful. But a great run chase!

Best ever win by Pakistan. Dhoni can say and said that he didn't miss the 5th bowler but infact he badly did. Ganguly might had been economically better than some of the main bowlers but he eased the pressure and didn't take any wicket. Karthik or a 4th seamer might have taken the wicket of Younis, Misbah or Malik and could have turned the game for India.
Talking about Pakistan, Younis proved that he is also a match winner not only a good player and can handle the pressure well. Can't believe Pakistan made it after 105/3 in 23 overs. Well done Pakistan. Keep it up.

Tendulkar is still one of the most consistant batsman in the world and i think at this moment to have him out of the team would be a step taken back by India. India need to play 5th bowler and they have all left arm medium/fast bowlers(too predictable). Let the series carry on like this and it will be one to remember for both sets of supporters

Secondly i wnt to add that people of both countries are very quick to question the perfromance of their country on few results. In my opinion india also played really well particularly sachin and gambhir(I think gambhir is the next ganguly for india).

Sachin, Gambir, Yuvraj, Sehwag and Bhajji made useful contributions for Team India. Younis, Butt, Afridi, Misbah, Tanvir and colleagues provided a fitting reply to the Indian challenge.

Of the bowlers, experienced Saurav Ganguly and upcoming ArPy Singh tried their best to keep a check on the rival batsmen. A few more tight overs from the other Indian bowlers could have made things difficult for Younis and Co.

Let us wish the two teams well in the remaining encounters.

Although apart from Tendulkar and Gambhir and a bit of Yuvraj, the other batsmen failed and they were lucky that Harbhajan could repair some of the damage. If India had been on top batting form though they would have had at least 350. I thik they should bring Rahul Dravid back though.

I do not think removing Ganguly or Tendulkar from the top of the innings is necessary or wise. It appears that each of them score in a big way about 1 out of every 3 matches. I am willing to accept that for some openers as it is ridiculous to expect batsmen to go off in every game.

One this game did highlight well is how both teams, while having some talent in the bowling, are atrocious at fielding and need to tighten their discipline. A total of 67 extras were bowled in this match, or roughly a tenth of the aggregate runs. That is quite frankly unacceptable, particularly if either team expects to pose a challenge to teams like Australia or South Africa. One thing I have never understood is why fielding in subcontinental teams (with the possible exception of sri lanka) is so abominably terrible. When you are paid hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars a year to catch a ball, one would think you could deliver every now and then.

Congratulations to Pakistan on an excellent run chase. The series is still wide open. Lets wait for the next game of good cricket.

Yaa..,Younis Khan really played a true inning and played causiously and guided his team home in Mohali.I watched the ODI in the stadium, the run rate was creeping up as the Pakistan's inning with the bat was progrssing, but Younis Khan did not loose his patience and held his nerve and just was dissmissed from where Shaid Afridi could take his team home. And S. Afridi launched his onslaught and fashioned in a very remarkable run chase in One Day cricket. The night was lightened with the brust of crackers in the stadium as soon as Pakistan scored the winning the runs. The crackers were burnt to celebrate Deewali which was on November 9 ,2007,a day after the high voltage encounter.I was feeling cold sitting in the stands ,but the I forgot everything as the game became a NAIL BITTING ONE in the end.Pakistan played superbly ,and India also batted well.

India and Pakistan have great players but I have noticed Pakistani Batsmen dont concentrate on the game situations, play stupid shots and gets out becoz of their own mistakes. When I see Younus and Yousuf out my hopes of winings starts dieing. The most three disapointing players are the opening pair and Kamran Akamal. Also besides having some of the world best bowling we hardly see the good outcomes. They trying produce faster deliveries rather than line and lenght and understanding the batsman weakest areas. I wont say anything about the feilding its been always the same.

I noticed every pakistani captain when they lose they leave similar comments "we made few mistakes, we have learnt from our mistakes, if we had scored such n such score we cud have won" I dont understand when they are going to stop making mistakes.

It was a sensational run chase by Pakistan who played superbly throghout in their innings in Mohali under lights. The wicket had been perfect to bat on till the last ball was delivered ,but the curator mentioned that the team batting second would have to play causiously for first 10 odd overs as the ball would move in that period.Salman Butt played sencibly incially ,played causiously, then Younis came in after the fall of wicket ,guided his team throughout. He and Misbah-Ul-Haq came together and involved in a partnership which set up the stage for their team victory.
I watched the game sitting in the VIP BLOCK.Nervousness started creeping up all around the stadium as Pakistan were cruising. They needed 53 odd off 36 balls before losing two wickets in the meantime to twist the game. The game was a NAIL BITTING ENCOUNTER AS it was stretched to the wires.S. Afridi erased India's hope and dissapponited the jam PACKED stadium with his onslaught. The fireworks in the stadium began after Sohail Tanvir scored the winning runs.Pakistan chased brilliantly.
