Natasha's story

Victoria Derbyshire | 08:49 AM, Wednesday, 3 October 2007

Interesting how most of those texting in yesterday had little sympathy with the 17-year-old who agreed to swallow 11 bags of crack cocaine in return for 拢3000 and a free holiday in Grenada.

Let's be honest, it was because she had an attitude, she was cocky and despite what had happened to her, she sounded way too happy (which one of our contributors put down to sheer joy at being freed from jail).

Yet those who RANG us felt more empathy towards her. Why the difference between to the two groups of listeners?

Listen to both parts of the interview which contains some strong language

Unusually I missed the show yesterday, but I'm not surprised that there was little sympathy for this girl.

I hope neither of my teenage kids would be that stupid

    Hi Victoria

The girl yesterday was a reminder of why I'm leaving for Canada next summer. Without sounding like the Daily Mail (I'm a Indi reader!) this country in general is paying the price for the 80s still. The parents now are uneduated and have a lack of interest in the greater world. Unfortunately they're now having children that are far more concerned of reading heat magazine than anything of real interest.
I've travelled around the world for my job for the past 7yrs and I can say with doubt Britain is a poorer place in many ways.

    Thank you
    Alan

I'm a 31yr old guy and I find it tragic that there are so many sad people out there.

The audience listening to a radio programme at 9.00 onwards must be very demographically unbalanced as it implies that most of them are not working. Radio 5 lives audience is also I would say predominantly white and middle class. Therefore it is often pointless that they debate issues affecting poorer people such as crime, poverty & anti social behaviour.

    Hello Victoria,

Empathy for the girl, or, lack of it, aside:

I think that texting and emailing is more anonymous than an actual 'phonecall to the studio. This, I think, makes the former often less sympathetic and certainly more hurried than an actual telephone call during which people have more time to listen and contemplate.

It's like the view that a hand-written letter has more thought put into it. It's more personal.

I dont think a lot of texters would expound the same views in the cold light of day.

I often send emails to your and other shows on FiveLive, many of which I am sure are frowned upon. They are invariably political and, I suppose, usually construed as "anti-establishment".

However, I have never telephoned as I dont think people are given sufficient time to state their case in any daytime show.

    best wishes,

I heard the interview and was very sad but not surprised that young people from certain backgrounds in this country have no notion of right and wrong or the consequences of their actions on society.I suspect this girl is typic al of many inner city kids with no life goals nor any ambition to educate and better themselves. Despite all the information available today via news ,TV ,internet, newspapers and radio programmes like yours (and many similar ones) etc etc, these children remain ignorant of all around them, but there immediate peers views. This is the issue here that no one seems to tackle. The hundreds of charities ,quango's support groups and yourselves are completely useless in this respect because you are completely invisible to these people.Your listeners do not include many children ,and I suspect none from these groups, or their friends and associates .So although you may think you (THE MEDIA)are helping air these issues you are preaching to the converted,WASTING YOUR BREATH,SORRY!!!

    Hi Jim

So what makes someone 'phone me? Is it because they feel really strongly about a subject or a story in the news? Because they have a pertinent experience to share which can shed some light? Two million people listen to the show every week - only 20% at any one time ring me.

John says he reckons the audience is "demographically unbalanced". We know people listen at home, in the car/lorry and more and more listen at work because many more work from home.

I might post on here to explain what happens when you ring in ...I think perhaps a lot of peopl imagine they go straight on air and don't have time to collect their thoughts.

she is a very stupid girl if she expects us to believe she didn't know what she was required to do. The fact that she was transferred back to a British prison is a joke anyone jailed abroad should do their time abroad instead of being transferred to our holiday camps. I will predict that this girl will be in trouble again probably drug related because prison is not a deterrent to people like her,her whole way of life and her background is one in which drugs plays a big part

Victoria, what do yo do? If you were to ask Jane Garvey that question, she might well respond that you "give very good microphone" but, of course, it would be inappropriate for me to say that.
By hosting a phone in, you give too many brassed necked, sad people the opportunity to hear their own voices over the national network, thus giving them 15 seconds of fame. It appalls me, just how many intolerant people are about, particularly on the Steven Nolan show.
Just the other night, they were queuing up to lambast a soldier who had received 拢150,000 in compensation for the horrific injuries serving his country in Iraq.
With regard to the young lady, who was sent to prison for handling drugs, it is so easy to judge other people when you have not been there yourself.
When you are skint and have no future, 拢3000 is a lot of money.

    Hello Victoria,

The initial question you asked was, of course, why those people that texted the show, seemed less sympathetic to the girl than those that 鈥榩honed.

In that respect John鈥檚 argument is not logical. Is he saying that if you text a show between 9 am and 12 noon then you are unemployed and uneducated but if you 鈥榩hone a show between 9am and 12 noon then you are somehow not unemployed and uneducated?

His comments were also quite insulting. Of course you are correct, many people work from home and I work from home several days per week where possible. I therefore pay my full whack in taxes and NI contributions.

Many callers and texters to your show also do so from work, of course. We also have a number of stay at home parents and carers who look after their children and others full time and that makes them neither unemployed nor uneducated.

Anyway, I think people 鈥榩hone you because, firstly, they have the time to do so, and, as you say, because they either feel passionately about the subject you are discussing or have some experience of it that they want to share.

Maybe you 鈥渟hould鈥 post something about what happens when people telephone the show. I have some idea having spoken in the past on 大象传媒 Radio Scotland.

That鈥檚 why I think callers are possibly more sympathetic. When they are awaiting their turn to speak they are actually listening to others and perhaps hearing something that they didn鈥檛 previously consider.

Texts, on the other hand, are long gone by that time!

Feel free to edit this post. It's not my intention to start and argument with John. Not on your blog anyway.
