Ageist?

Victoria Derbyshire | 07:44 UK time, Tuesday, 22 January 2008

Here's an email complaining about me ...

"Dear Madam
On Friday you made a "joke" about not usually allowing anyone over 60 on the show. This comment is offensive and definitely ageist. It is not funny. You would not have made such a comment about women and definitely not about anyone of colour so why do you think that it is ok to make such a comment about over 60s. You should be ashamed at your attitude.
SPA Kennay"

Listen to the clip from Friday

Mr/Ms Kennay is absolutely right - I wouldn't have made the same comment about women or a listener from an ethnic minority. So why did I think it was appropriate to say it about an OAP? Maybe it's about context, or about the listener themself - maybe I could tell it would be taken as a joke...

I've just responded via Simon Mayo to the item on Sunday regarding 1 in 3 Doctors saying that the NHS will no longer treat elderly people.

Who do they think paid for the free training and their obscene salaries? I think the 'grey generation' should start a tax strike: we could go private, go abroad, anything but submit to this disgraceful deception.

While they're at it, sack the managers, stop silly 'conferences' and junkets, an dgive us what we toiled for over the last 40 years.

    How dare they!
