The nominees for the 2010 Academy Awards have been unveiled this afternoon, ahead of the glittering red carpeted, prize-giving night in March.

British nominees up for the cinematic world's most prestigious gongs include actors Dame Helen Mirren, Colin Firth and Carey Mulligan. Writers Nick Hornby (for An Education) and Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci and Tony Roche (In The Loop) are nominated in the adapted screenplay category and another British hopeful is Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park.

So, where's the well-hidden Welsh Oscar link in this blog post you may be wondering? Tenuous it may be, but one of the features in the Animated Feature Film category has its origins from the ink of a Welsh wordsmith.

Fantastic Mr Fox, directed by Wes Anderson and featuring the voices of George Clooney and Meryl Streep, was written by the Cardiff-born author - and children's favourite - Roald Dahl. The film is also nominated in the category of best Music (Original Score).

but also take a look at our Roald Dahl profile, and watch archive clips featuring Dahl's family talking about him.
