Dylan Thomas painting to exhibit in Wales and America

A painting featuring Dylan Thomas is to go on display in Wales before leaving for America, more than half a century after the Welsh poet died in the United States.

The painting, by Welsh artist Jeff Williams, is based on a photograph that features Thomas alongside other Kardomah Boys during a broadcast for the ´óÏó´«Ã½ in 1949. and .

Meanwhile, historian and journalist Paul Johnson has dismissed Thomas as a 'liar and a rotter' in his memoirs, recalling a time when he met him at Magadalen College, Oxford in the mid 1940s.

Johnson has told of how he watched the poet at work while Thomas and wife Caitlin were staying in Oxford as guests of historian AJP Taylor and his wife - and Dylan's benefactor - Margaret Taylor. He has noted how he drank beer while writing and threw the empty bottles into the nearby river.

Friends and admirers of the poet, including Gwen Watkins - widow of painter, poet and Dylan's great friend Vernon Watkins - have rushed to his defence. .
