When I was about 11, I and my like-minded mates used to debate regularly as to who was the best guitarist in the world. Was it ? ? ? ? ? Or maybe ?

Well now the man who managed Slash and his bandmates through their biggest success, Alan Niven, has declared a young guitarist from Abercarn as "the best up-and-coming player this century".

Niven - talking about Chris Buck of the Welsh band the - made the statement to magazine this month.

I've seen this guy many times and he's better than brilliant. His feel is amazing and his soloing as good as any. Huge, huge future. The band (Tom Hollister Trio) rocks too - ask Steve Winwood and James Towler; they were at the EP launch. Best British guitarist since Clapton, and possibly better at the same age.

    Hi James
thanks for your comment. I really want to check him out - I'm a sucker for a good solo. The thing with guitarists though (and I'm generalising) is that some of the best technical guitarists aren't great at writing songs, so it'll be interesting to see how he develops. And also it'll be interesting to see whether he's encouraged to go solo.
