I thought I'd give you a bit of background information on the main Springwatch outside broadcast (OB) location today.
Lake Vyrnwy is a Victorian reservoir consisting of a stone-built dam, built in the 1880's.
The building of the dam meant the local village of Llan had to be flooded and a distinctive gothic tower now rises up out of the lake.
This is actually a water filter so I'll never look at my water filter in the fridge, in quite the same way!
The area is littered with species and I had my first 'dawn chorus' experience today at 4am... as I mistakenly left the bedroom window open!
Pied flycatchers, redstarts and dippers all nest by the lake and rocky streams here as well as great crested grebes and goosanders.
Overhead you can see buzzards soaring, the occasional red kite, peregrine and goshawk if you've got a really good pair of eyes or were christened with the name 'Simon King'.
The area has an abundance of unique habitats ranging from moorland and woodland to wetlands, waterfalls and farmland and you'll get to see all of these over the coming weeks.
I'm planning on heading out early tomorrow with sound recordist Chris Watson to capture some dawn chorus using some high tech sound recording equipment, so I'll add a little bird song quiz to the blog to see if you can identify some of the species.
Keep an eye (and ear) out.
