Enchanted castle

Derek Brockway Derek Brockway | 11:21 UK time, Wednesday, 1 July 2009

I've just started recording a new series of Weatherman Walking for Radio Wales and did a cracking little walk the other day in Monmouthshire.

This is a circular walk, about 4.5 miles long, and packed with history, legends and wonderful views.

It starts off at a beautiful church in Llantillio Crossenny and you quickly arrive at an enchanting castle. Part of the walk is on the Offa's Dyke Trail although you don't actually walk on the Dyke itself. For me, though, the best part was arriving at White Castle.

I climbed up one of the towers and the views from the top are amazing. You can see for miles across the Monmouthshire countryside including The Skirrid or Holy Mountain which is close by.

The castle is well worth a visit and has a small shop where you can Welsh cakes, water and souvenirs.

Enjoying the views at White Castle:

I've read that Monmouthshire is the best part of Wales to live in and this walk is a great introduction to the county. Have a picnic in the castle grounds and enjoy the views.

You can listen to this walk and others on Radio Wales soon so tune in and keep an eye on the website for more information. The series begins on 17th July.

Oh and by the way, I've also started filming a new series of Weatherman Walking for the telly.

We're doing another 8 walks in some lovely parts of Wales but you'll have to be patient and wait until early next year to see them.

In the meantime, happy walking and enjoy the rest of the summer.

Derek
