Holy footsteps
I've been walking all over the place recently...
The other week I was on holiday in Croatia, last week in Northumberland walking and mountain biking (as some of you may have guessed), and now I'm back in sunny Wales on the tip of the Lleyn Peninsula in Aberdaron.
I'm here filming for a new TV series of Weatherman Walking which you'll able to see in the New Year.
I often look at the weather for Aberdaron when preparing my forecasts because there is an automatic weather station nearby which takes measurements and sends the information to the Met Office.
I've been to Pwllheli, Criccieth and Nant Gwrtheyrn in the past but I've never been to Aberdaron before so I'm looking forward to doing some walking and finding out more about the area.
Aberdaron is a tiny village on the NW coast, popular with holiday makers.
St. Hywyn's Church which was founded in the 5th century:
Back in the Middle Ages it was an important stopping off point on the 'pilgrim route' to the holy island of Bardsey or Ynys Enlli as it's known in Welsh.
People flocked here from all over the place. In fact it was said that three pilgrimages to Bardsey was equivalent to one pilgrimage to Rome!
Over the next couple of days, I'm going to be walking the last few miles of the 'pilgrim route' from Aberdaron to the point on the coast where they used to cross over to Bardsey island - then climbing up Mynydd Mawr where I'm told the views are magnificent.
Cumulus clouds above Ynysoedd Gwylanod or Islands of Seagulls:
Hopefully, the weather will be kind but we've already had some rain and showers today and more showers are forecast so I've brought my waterproofs just in case.
The beach here is lovely and the sea looks inviting but I don't think I will be going for a paddle because there are loads of jelly fish!
Moon jellyfish:
The thing that puzzles me, and maybe you can help me out here, but are the jelly fish alive when they are washed-up on the beach or do they die fairly quickly once out of the water?
I asked the rest of the crew but they weren't sure either!
So if anyone knows, please let me know in the comments section.
Derek
