Unsettled end for March

There is an old saying, 'If March comes in like a lamb it goes out like a lion or if March comes in like a lion it goes out like a lamb'..

March is at the end of the northern hemisphere winter when the sun is moving northwards over the equator and the temperature difference between northern and southern latitudes is at its greatest. This means that the is also near its maximum strength and deep depressions in the Atlantic can bring us plenty of rain and strong winds.

The saying reflects the fickle nature of spring weather in Wales. One day can be fine and warm, the next cold, wet and windy with snow thrown in for good measure.

This year March came in like a lamb with light winds and sunshine on St. David's Day, but it's going to go out like a lion. Winter is going to bite back with a deep area of low pressure bringing heavy rain, gales and sleet and snow.

Wednesday will be the coldest and windiest day of the week with strong to gale force winds making it feel very cold. Some significant snow is likely too on the higher ground with blizzards and drifting on some hills and mountains.

So although we've enjoyed some pleasantly mild weather this March, winter has not finished with us yet. Temperatures will recover again later this week but the Easter Holiday weekend looks unsettled. Some rain and showers with some drier, brighter intervals in between. It will also be breezy if not windy at times making it feel on the chilly side.
