World Cup 2006 Blog

From our reporters in Germany

Ominous words

ronaldinho203.jpgLONDON - "Now my focus is on the World Cup. . ." These are the ominous words of the world's greatest footballer Ronaldinho, who refuses to bask in the glory of Barcelona's Champions League triumph in his latest .

A timely reminder, that whether Wayne Rooney is declared fit or not on Thursday, England will probably have to go through Brazil and Ronaldinho to win football's greatest prize.

The defending champs will be training in Switzerland. England are just back from Portugal. So where are the rest of the World Cup teams limbering up? Let us know if you have any inside information - perhaps they are training in your home town.

Of course Ronaldinho is a contemporary great - but he can be contained, as ten man Arsenal proved. The same should be said of Rooney. What people constantly forget - and England has been guilty of this for years - is that the team is far greater than the individual...

I agree about the comment that Arsenal contained Ronaldinho very well.

There is no reason whatsover why the likes of Terry and Rio cannot do the same.

I think it is the collective force of Brazil that England should worry about if we they meet them.

So, Smicer is injured AGAIN:-), Galasek has some problems with his knee ligaments but otherwise everyone seems to be ok. The team is complaining only about one thing, and that is weather. Also, Nedved suggested that he might play in next Euro qualification. That's fantastic news for us. And last information is that Pavel Mares from Zenith Petrohrad, might move to Sparta Prague over the summer.

Great points about Ronaldinho especially about containing him, as has been proved before without space and some heavy tackles he can certainly be brought down a peg or two.

Let's hope his practicing of hitting the crossbar for TV adverts actually pays off and he can't find the net ;)

Media are on to it, lots of hype for the friendly tonight, green and gold flags hanging out of cars etc. What do people think of Australia's chances of getting past the group stages?
Everyone here is super confident and the tradional Aussie Rules Football is being overshadowed , finally!!

As far as Media Hype goes, the situation is the same in Japan. The Japanese team have finished their camp in Japan, and will head out for Germany on Friday (26th). They will be camping at Bonn, and will have a friendly against Germany on June 1.

Bonn would be having a media frenzy unseen since the day Bundestag moved to Berlin from there.

Ronaldinho is almost up there in the pantheon of the greats: Pele, Maradona.
(I 'm writing this while my 2 1/2 year old is kicking the ball up and down the house!!!)

Ronaldinho just needs a few mature and masterful appearances in a few weeks time to be ranked with the greatest.

I agree he was not at his best against Arsenal but am not too sure it was the marking as opposed to too much hype leading to the event. This is probably going to be Ronaldinho's greatest test as everyone expects that with every touch of the ball we are going to see some awesome, scintillating, out of this world ball handling.
(Ball just flew past the screen!!)

He may not be aware of it (even though some of his statements appear to show he knows where he is in this whole scenario) but the expectations can mess with his head.

Come World Cup time he has 10 brilliant mates on the field working with him so the pressure will not be as great so I expect him to rise to this great and wonderful occasion.

I鈥檓 writing from the Caribbean so besides out unfailing love for Brazil, and love/hate relationship with England I am rooting for Trinidad & Tobago.
