Bobbies in Frankfurt

tom_geoghegan.gifFRANKFURT - The first British bobbies to patrol foreign streets in uniform have begun work in Frankfurt.harold_203.jpg

A chorus of "Bobby, bobby, give us a song," rang out in the main square Romerplatz, courtesy of a group of Ipswich fans enjoying the sunshine and the German lager.

And one of the officers, a Liverpudlian known as "Robbie the Bobby", cheerfully obliged with "We won it five times", referring to his club's haul of European Cups.

He is one of four uniformed officers on the streets of Frankfurt, offering help and trying to bridge any cultural misunderstandings between fans and the German police.

They began work being treated like minor celebrities, posing for pictures with international tourists and youngsters.

That is absolutely awesome. Two things are very surprising about this little titbit. 1) A scouse bobby who sings(!)(?) and 2) there are only 4... maybe they do barbershop quartets on request!

It is very good to have someone in the streets for the foreign people to help them get over from the misunderstandings between fans and German police. Mr. Bobby is providing a fresh entertainment to the fans that is praiseworthy.

My hubbie is out there and one of the bobbies (he is stationed in Liverpool) and is actually a southerner - Maidstone boy)!
He says so far so good - great atmosphere - lets hope the english fans enjoy the whole thing - the football and the fun of it, and make it one of the best world cups yet. My hubbie says they have been treated fantastic by the German authorities and are proud to be out there to support not only the team, but more importantly the fans - who after all make the game!

Good luck to all teams - but being biased COME ON ENGLAND!!!!
xx

A very nice anecdote to kick off what could be the best of all the blogs - if things dont go to plan later in the tournament and trouble starts, this reporter could have the toughest task reporting the chaos. Good luck!

I've got friends who are in Frankfurt at the moment and they've told me how co-operative and friendly the UK police are. Long may it continue!
