Friday night on air . . .

Paul Coletti | 17:09 UK time, Friday, 27 October 2006

We're discussing the modesty (or lack thereof) of female attire and whether it's ever right to rename airports, towns and provinces in the name of righting historical innacuracies: is South Africa's airport justified?

And reading out your mails, texts and comments tonight . . . please meet the newest member of the WHYS team, all the way from Johannesburg, SA: Tshepang Motsekuoa.

Female Modesty

Barbra in the US wasn鈥檛 happy with some aspects of last night鈥檚 programme, especially our caller Rick: 鈥淩ape has very little to do with a woman鈥檚 dress. It鈥檚 to do with taking power.鈥

Ali in Mombassa has a message for Barbra: 鈥淚 agree with Rick. Barbra, you go around in those types of dresses you鈥檙e inviting trouble. Isn鈥檛 it good for a woman to roam around decently? In fact he鈥檚 being protective towards women.鈥

Alison: 鈥淎 woman should be able to dress how they choose, I don鈥檛 like the fashion I see . . .. 鈥

Ali: Thank you!

Alison: 鈥 . . . I want to go and do my groceries without seeing some young girl without her chest exposed. I don鈥檛 agree with the way muslim women dress. I think that is outrageous. Where is the middle line?鈥

Rachel: 鈥淓very time you leave the house you make a choice in what you wear. I鈥檓 married; I鈥檓 not looking to pickup a man. We have to clarify what Ali means by asking for trouble.鈥

Khalid in Kuwait is suggesting that women must shoulder some responsibility.

Karen in the Netherlands: 鈥淎 woman is beautiful as she is. You maybe need to examine your own relationship and how you feel about your wife.鈥

Rebecca: 鈥淲hy should we be responsible for regulating other people鈥檚 behaviour?鈥

Khan has phoned in from the Middle East: 鈥淩ape is very uncommon here in Afghanistan. Most of the boys would prefer to marry the women who dress modestly because they respect them. If someone is showing off their bodies they don鈥檛 command so much respect.鈥

David is in Australia: 鈥淏reasts and the area between the legs should not be seen by the man. For men it鈥檚 different.鈥

Jules: 鈥淲hen I鈥檝e experienced assault I鈥檝e been wearing very ordinary clothing.鈥

The OR Thambo International Airport

Thebe: 鈥淧eople who undermined black people are not happy. I鈥檓 very, very happy.鈥

Corne: 鈥淭his is not a political issue.鈥

Thebe: 鈥淭his has everything to do with black/white issues.鈥

Jacob: The name (OR Thambo) represents democracy for all South Africans black and white.鈥

Thebe: 鈥淲e are wiping out what was morally reprehensible. They should not squirm.鈥

Bongile: 鈥淚 don鈥檛 have anything against the name but I don鈥檛 see why we have to celebrate heroes from one party.鈥

Corne: 鈥淭he freedom charter states that SA belongs to all. If we start naming things after one party or another the government will not last long and we鈥檒l start all over again. Let鈥檚 reach out to all communities. It seems that the ANC are focusing on Afrikaner names 鈥 names from my community. I find it very objectionable. We need to find accommodation. I object to the ANC鈥檚 perception of democracy. Democracy means how do you accommodate the minorities.鈥

Sulu: 鈥淎 lot of South Africans don鈥檛 know the contribution that OR Thambo made. Naming an airport after him bring his memory to the forefront. I鈥檓 happy.鈥

Corne has a suggestion for an airport named after an Afrikaner : 鈥淧aul Kruger was a man who had nothing to do with apartheid. He鈥檚 a very respected person. I鈥檓 convinced we can find win-win solutions. Forget about the Afrikaners.鈥

Thebe: 鈥淜ruger would not be ok. He was one of the leaders who consolidated the Africa nationalist ideology.鈥

Dumisani in Zimbabwe: 鈥淚f you don鈥檛 know where your coming from you don鈥檛 know where you鈥檙e going to.鈥

Tapan is in Calcutta: 鈥淣ame changes can be for several reasons. If it鈥檚 Colonial humiliation then it鈥檚 justified.鈥
