Since 2008, our local councils have been responsible for stray dogs. Last year, council officers picked up an astounding twelve thousand strays.
Guest presenter Lisa Rogers goes behind the scenes at Cardiff's Dog Home in tonight's programme. Lisa, an animal lover who has a menagerie (including a dog, two cats, five chickens and even a small flock of sheep!), joins dog warden Steve Green during a typical working day to see what his busy job entails.
How you can make sure your dog gets traced back to you if it goes missing:
- Ensure your dog has a collar with your contact details on it. It's a legal requirement for any dog in a public place.
- Get your dog microchipped at your vets. Your dog is then permanently identified as yours, so if it's ever lost it can be easily traced back to you.
- Don't forget to inform the company the microchip is registered with if you move house.
- If your dog does go missing, or if you find a stray on the street, contact .
