Hottest Record - La Roux - Bulletproof

Zane Lowe | 20:52 UK time, Tuesday, 28 April 2009

Good ol' La Roux, eh? Still trucking after all these months. All jokes aside, the rapid rise of this electro pop group has been a surprise to all, even the band themselves. Which would explain why there's a lot of confidence in this new single, our Hottest Record, 'Bulletproof'. Understandably so, it's a big pop song and when you consider the success of 'In For The Kill', it should be a shoe in for a high chart placing. That said, why do people like La Roux? Is it their pop sensibility or is it the hint of darkness which is evident in the early tunes. Your call. Give us a clue with a comment. Tomorrow the return of Jamie T. TOMORROW THE RETURN OF JAMIE T.

I like! Apreciating the electro beat, yeah! (Not quite as much as 'In For The Kill' though.)

I wish Zane would let his interviewees talk more in his interviews. He asks loooong questions then interupts them and forcefully interprets their answers. No need, it just comes accross as rude, especially when the interviewee is struggling to get a word in. Also why obsess over genres?!

"...why do people like La Roux?"

Well, answering that is almost as tricksy as explaining Lady Gaga...

On another note, the Malakai, Taking Back Sunday, Spor, XX and Horrors tracks last night reassure me all is not lost in popular music ;)

A little repetitive but I reckon it will be just as popular as 'In for the Kill' nice catchy chorus. A song that just gets stuck in your head.

How to explain Lady Gaga's success... are you kidding ? no ! OK here goes.....

    1) Songs dripping in commercial appeal with huge melodic hooks in the chorus. This is the foundation.

2)Modern cutting edge production , vocals allowed to soar in all the right places.

    3) Fun , entertaining videos that complement the song.

    4) The singer being an excellent songwriter who understands the sensibility of writing a good pop song. The bottom line is without good , catchy pop songs it would not work.. it is the songs that are the most important thing in the music business !

    5) The singer having an energetic and ambitious work ethic that is only interested in success.

    6) A hard working and forward looking management team that have total faith in Lady Gaga's talent and songs that have pushed to get them seen and heard by as many people as possible.

    7) Intense publicity that has made Lady Gaga an "A" list star all over Europe and Number one in most countries.

In summary its great pop songs , hard work and excellent management.

(Having good songs that are "A" listed at RADIO 1 is also very, very important.

    Hope this helps....

It's official fiery red heads rock! Great tune, it makes you want to hear the rest of the album. You hope that people will pretty receptive of it seeing as it follows on the back of two BIG remixes, the Skream one and the High Contrast one, which showcased her voice well, but clearly aren't representative of her own sound, no doubt the album will be a true reflection of that.

As an afterthough thats the problem with popular remixes that they can eclipse the original work, like, Tori Amos, when I think of her I don't instantly think of one of her own songs, but this springs to mind

Well, I can see the blog's profile is rocketing - someone on Lady Gaga's PR team is in da house! ;)

It was kind of a rhetorical question though. I *know* most people want slick but vacuous product wrapped up in 'sexy' packaging, that paths through all the familiar bases...

    Still don't like it :]
