Review by Noisette, a local theatre-goer

In his one-man show, the versatile Steve Steen took the audience on a journey littered with characters and places from Bill Bryson's best selling book, Notes from a Small Island.

Bryson's is an irreverent, but deeply affectionate and humorous appraisal of some of our most endearing, baffling and annoying national traits and it's brought to life by Steen's equally affectionate interpretation of the book.

The British are unusually good about letting you take the piss out of them, it is one of their most admirable qualities.
quote end
Bill Bryson
Bill Bryson said in his tour of Britain he "took a decision early to avoid all the obvious places".

Thus the audience found themselves wandering, by the vagaries of public transport, to places as diverse as Llandudno, Bradford and the Gorbals.

We laughed as he struggled with the language, not just Welsh soap operas on TV and Scots barmen, but with phrases like "20 number six, please," and "Do you want the full English?"

In Ludlow we laughed again as he wondered how much the "family butcher" might charge to do this service.

Steve Steen explores all these insights with inspired delivery, backed up with clever sound and lighting effects.

"The British are unusually good about letting you take the piss out of them" said Bryson, "it is one of their most admirable qualities."

This entertaining show proves him right!
