Culture identity is humourously explored in this touring Kali Theatre production at Warwick Arts Centre.
The Singhs feel as if they don't fit in, so Mr Singh suggests they join a dance class to meet 'intellectual middle class white people'.
But Mrs Singh is quite happy at home with her Asian ways and lifestyle. She prefers the quiet life, or so she thinks!
After joining the dance class she becomes a new woman and discovers a new found energy. For the first time since being in England she is happy.
But their daughter doesn't feel comfortable with rejecting her Asian roots. She wants to get back to tradition and get an arranged marriage with a nice boy.
She challenges her parents acceptance in conforming to an English way of life.
Their son thinks they're all mad. He just wants to study to be a surgeon, and his pratices his skills on baby dolls!
Mr and Mrs Singh are accepted into the finals. The preparation for the dancing finals begins, with costume making and lots of practicing.
Mr Singh sees his costume that looks like a Latin style Elvis. He pretends to have a bad heart to get out of the finals, so Mrs Singh then has to turn to her surgeon son for help!
The plot and dialogue of The Singh Tangos is excellent with some laugh out loud moment and superb acting .
The stage design was simple and the entire play was set inside a room of their house.
I felt that the lighting could have improved some of the scenes, particularly the dancing scenes. I was disappointed not to see the disco glitter ball!
It was a first for me to see a play with an entire Asian cast and I will look out for Kali theatre again.
You can see the Singh Tangos on Friday 3 May 7:45pm at Warwick Arts Centre.
The Akram Khan Company with a stage set designed by sculptor Anish Kapoor are at Warwick Arts Centre on May 14, see their website (on left) for more details.
