You don't need to know about the history of the building to feel its importance, as the contrast of the cathedral ruins alongside the opulent new cathedral creates a striking atmosphere.
The cathedral remains a focus for many of Coventry's events as its fortunes have been bound with those of the city throughout its history, most memorably in World War II.

Many visitors enjoy the architecture and are surprised by the quantity and quality of art works inside the cathedral.
Our virtual tours (click on the pictures on the right) show some of the best stained glass and tapestries.
The baptistery window, designed by John Piper, is a powerful stained glass art work, made up of 195 dazzling and colourful panels.
Above the main alter is an awe-inspiring tapestry of Christ the King, designed by Graham Sutherland.
The rich greens and golds shine out across the cathedral floor as the face of Christ bears down on visitors.

The Millennium Chapel is the newest addition to the cathedral.
It was purpose-designed as a place reserved for quiet contemplation and prayer.
The boundary of the chapel is marked by a specially commissioned glass screen. The screen bears the names of people to be remembered.
More names can be etched on the screen as a memorial in return for a donation to the cathedral.

The Millennium Chapel is just one of a series of intimate chapels in the cathedral.
The chapels feel like a secret discovery as you walk from the huge and powerful high altar and find yourself in the small, often circular, rooms.
In these rooms, too, visitors and worshipers can enjoy art works, engravings, beautiful design and unusual architecture.
