What Was Lost Part 1: Sacrifice

Review

One thing Farscape can never be accused of is underestimating the intelligence of its audience. Like the pinnacles of the show, What Was Lost: Sacrifice is a seriously challenging piece of television.

Carrying on the same breakneck pace as Crichton Kicks, the episode piles on the confusion.  Sadly, it doesn't use the extra space offered by a two-parter to let the story unfold naturally, which leads to some disappointing consequences.

Was it really necessary to make ball-breaking academic Vella such a walking lump of exposition, for instance? (Though her character did answer one question - all Interions are that irritating, it's not just Jool.)

There were so many threads going on - the unhappy reunion between D'Argo and Chiana, Granny's bizarre fixations, plus random sea monsters and snails you stick up your hooter, that the first half of the episode felt like nothing but a set up for part two.

Thankfully, it picked up steam big time whenever Grayza appeared on screen.  Right from her Radox moment with Braca, every scene with her dealt out the right kind of Farscape shock.  Always better at sensuality than any other sci-fi programme, here Farscape just lets it all out with explosive effect - rather like gimp-Scorpius over Braca.

This, plus superb acting by Browder and Melissa Jaffer (Granny) ramped up the energy towards the end of the episode until Crichton's climactic leap didn't seem out of place.  The second half didn't quite make up for the failures of the first, but maybe next week's conclusion will lead to all being forgiven.
