Colin
Wilson (acoustic guitar and vocals), Dave Eustace (percussion) and
Keith Hunter (bass guitar) are The Boys from Melbourne Street. Colin
has been telling Devon Demos about the Exeter based music makers...
Not
the youngest boy band we've been introduced to...lol Average
age about 167 - but we've not been well! It's fair to say we've
got experience on our side!
We go back a long while. Dave and I worked together in our early
20s (when we had hair) but then Dave moved to the U.S.A and I was
left to play in pubs and clubs, which is when I met Keith.
Many years later I bumped into Dave again and we thought it would
be fun to look at some of the old back catalogue and see if the
magic was still there.
After a couple of sessions we decided we needed a bass player and
I gave Keith a call. The rest as they say......
Music usually
falls into fairly certain categories but yours seems to transcend
several.. Whenever we have to fill in forms we're asked
to tick a box and when I've been through all the options I'm usually
left with 'Easy Listening'. But I'd hate to be thought of as easy
listening as it makes you think of lift music. I'd like to think
our music had a bit more individuality.
I have attempted to create moods and temperament using jazz, folk,
rock and country music in a simplistic, uncluttered and almost raw
style,. Coz that鈥檚 how it is.

The
CD that the demo, Intoxicated, is taken from is full of love songs.. The
title Songs From The Heart should give you a big clue.
I don鈥檛 want to get too mushy, but this collection of songs is about
True Love. Hearts broken and mended, promises kept and tested, raised
hopes and fears, unconditional love and forgiveness whatever the
price, and so often you don鈥檛 know why. You just know.
For those of you that have been there and worn the T shirt, you
will hopefully recognise those familiar feelings and emotions that
I've tried hard to truly capture.
Where
did the name come from...?
When the three of us first got together in November 2003 to try
out a couple of songs, it was at Dave鈥檚 flat in Melbourne Street.
You can work the rest out.
How
about playing live - isn't it made difficult by the fact that you
don't perform cover versions? It's never easy
to get gigs when you perform all originals - but a local pub gave
us a chance to play and we went down a storm and they immediately
asked us back. Now we have the CD people can listen to us first
before they book us.
And you don't need a lot of complicated electric amps and speakers...
No. Basically we can play in very small intimate venues without
any problem.
The Boys From Melbourne Street chatted and played a short live set
on 大象传媒 Radio Devon in January 2005. You can listen again by clicking
