Name | Sam Petter |
Pitching | Tatty Bumpkin |
Investment Required | £200,000 |
Equity Offered | 20% |
Brief Description | A children's lifestyle brand that includes clothing, yoga, toys and books. |
If enthusiasm was all that was needed to secure an investment then Sam Petter would have been walking away with a deal. But a perceived lack of planning and unrealistic projected figures meant the Dragons did not back her.
Sam has invested close to a £250,000 of her own money into the business but admits that she has only made £19,000 profit so far.
Duncan shows his diplomatic side
Duncan Bannatyne asks Sam about her growth projections. She explains that her £5 million figure by 2014 is based on her securing a television animation series deal on one of her characters. Duncan is dismissive, saying she has very little chance of making this happen. Peter agrees.
Sam is then asked about the brand and starts to give a very energetic demonstration of how children use the Tatty Bumpkin character in classes. The Dragons are amused and bemused by this in equal measure.
Asked by Theo Paphitis about her background, the Dragon is unimpressed by Sam's failure to finish a business studies degree course.
James Caan states that although he is impressed by Sam's confidence he believes she would be difficult to work with as she lacks focus. For those reasons he is out.
Deborah Meaden asks what she understands by the term 'brand'. Sam says it’s a creative and fun way to interact with children but Deborah is not impressed. She suggests Sam must revisit her business plan and declares herself out.
While Theo admits he likes her franchise business and the classes, he feels the clothing and animation ideas are not realistic and he too declares himself out.
Peter says he is amazed by her talent and energy and apologises for giving her a tough time. He says however she needs focus and restrictions to channel her. Peter says that’s not for him and is the next Dragon out.
Duncan is left to sum up and before declaring himself out says he thinks the other Dragons have been too kind and that the bubbly entrepreneur needs to take a reality check. He says the animation will not work but will cost her a lot, leaving her in big trouble. With that parting shot, sam leaves the Den emptyhanded.
No investment.
