Shaun Pulfrey didn't manage to tame the Dragons with his detangling brush in the Den. Did he glide through his first two years selling Tangle Teezer?
After the Den, Shaun took on marketing and sales staff with experience in professional haircare to launch the brush at hairdressing exhibition Salon International.
"Whether it's been a small salon, or online or prestigious salons, everyone's saying the same thing… which is rapid growth in sales" says Shaun, who admits he's barely had time to breathe as the product has gone on sale in independent and chain salons across the country and online.
Tangle Teezer has also appeared in salons internationally from Canada to Israel while back at home a deal with the UK’s leading chemist chain has dramatically increased Tangle Teezer's profile.
Shaun has been able to invest the profits from his initial success into further product development. After attending the Design Council's Designing Demand programme he has two new versions of the detangling brush going on sale in the next year.
The enthusiastic entrepreneur's also still hoping to crack the American market and admits it will be a "mammoth" task to meet the anticipated demand.
Shaun was interviewed for this article on 21 July 2009
Reflecting on Shaun's brush with the Dragons, Deborah Meaden suggested he shouldn't have accused them of dying their hair while Duncan said at the time that working with the hairdresser would leave him "pulling his hair out".
Two years on, Duncan visits Shaun at his salon in Kensington in the heart of London's West End and gets to use the Tangle Teezer himself on a model. "The product works and it's better than a comb" is the Scot's verdict.
Shaun informs Duncan that he has manufactured and sold over 250,000 units and while his Companies House records reveal that he made a loss last year of £18,000, he has made pre-tax profits of £127,000 this year.
After looking through Shaun's books, Duncan confides to the entrepreneur "I often get asked which (business) is the one that got away, which is the one you wished you'd invested in. There's one or two I mention but maybe this is the one that will take over now".
On leaving his salon, Duncan speculates on Shaun's future. "I think the product Shaun has invented has the potential to make him a really good living and perhaps a seven figure sum".
