Ten years ago, 12 of Shakespeare's most popular plays were abridged and animated for the 大象传媒/S4C series: Shakespeare, The Animated Tales. The success of these adaptations led to the birth of a UK-wide Festival where teachers and pupils have the opportunity to produce and direct their own interpretations of one of these Shakespeare plays.
Now fully established, The Shakespeare Schools Festival* puts
some 10,000 young actors onto professional stages each year,
covering the UK on a triennial cycle.
This year, as part of the year long celebration of the life and work of William Shakespeare across the 大象传媒 during 2005, 大象传媒 Drama and the Shakespeare Schools Festival (SSF) are worked together to create One Night of Shakespeare.
Each selected school received workshop training for both its young actors and its directors. Run by the four National Youth Theatres of Great Britain, the actors' workshops covered all aspects of performing on a professional stage. For directors, workshops covered all elements of professional and technical directing. The experience culminated in the Night itself: thousands of young students from 400 schools performed their interpretations of Shakespeare in theatres across the UK on the evening of July 3.
