The Tempest
The last of Shakespeare's great Elizabethan romance plays, The Tempest mixes tragedy with romantic comedy.
Prospero, a sorcerer, and his daughter Miranda have been living on a remote island for 12 years. They have been there since the day Propsero's brother plotted with the King of Naples to take power over his position as the Duke of Milan. Soon after he arrived on the island, Prospero freed a trapped spirit Ariel who carries out most of the sorcerer's commands. Also on the island is Caliban, son of the witch Sycorax, whom Prospero has taken as a slave.
When magic reveals Prospero's old enemies are aboard a ship nearby, he creates a storm and the ship is wrecked. Soon the survivors of the shipwreck land on the island and separate into three groups. Ariel tempts Ferdinand, who is the son of Alonso, King of Naples, to Prospero and he instantly falls in love with Miranda.
In the meantime Prospero's brother Antonio convinces the king's brother Sebastian to kill Alonso and take his place as king but Ariel foils the plan. As magical occurrences multiply, two further survivors from the ship wreck, Stephano and Trinculo come across Caliban who plots to kill Prospero and take over the island - again Ariel hears and the plan is wrecked.
Prospero's magical abilities are put on show as he creates then takes away marvellous banquets of food for Antonio and Alonso, whilst Ariel hounds them for their crime against the sorcerer. Caliban, Stephano and Trinculo are also punished for their plotting against Prospero. Finally the sorcerer confronts his brother and Alonso over losing his rightful position as the Duke of Milan.
The king apologises for his actions and is immediately reunited with his son Ferdinand, who he is happy to learn is about to marry Miranda.
Antonio won't apologise but Prospero offers forgiveness anyway, and gets set to go back home, having given back all his magic. After releasing Ariel and the repentant Caliban, Prospero only asks one last thing from his spirit assistant - calm seas and favourable winds for their trip back to Naples.
