1. HIS CRICKET CAREER WAS A CLOSE RUN 'FIN'
At school we had to go and see careers advisers and I told
one of them that I wanted to be a professional cricketer.
They obviously thought I was talking a complete load of rubbish
and they told me to go into fish farming. They thought that
was a worthwhile career to pursue if you liked the outdoor
life.
2.
HE'S GOTTA LITTLE BOTTLE I collect miniatures - those little mini bottles of spirits.
I've got three boxes in my loft full of miniatures that I've
never had the nerve to do anything with. It was very 80s.
I used to pick them up when I went away on holiday with the
family; from the age of about 11 - you'd get ten in a bag
from Spain. I don't drink them. There's one called Voodoo
Liquor. I'll never have the nerve to drink that. I still pick
the odd one up whenever I go away - just to show I've been.
3.
HE WAS LITTLE WHEN HE FIRST GOT A BOTTLE I did get horribly drunk when I was 11. We went on holiday
with another family and for some reason myself and my younger
brother, and the other family's sons, a boy my age and his
younger brother, got hold of this bottle of sherry from the
local supermarket. We started to drink it and the next thing
I knew; I was falling about absolutely everywhere. Our parents
were in the restaurant of the hotel and we went in there and
fell all over the place. I remember my mum and dad having
to take turns to sit with me in my room for the rest of the
night in case I fell out of the window. It was a horrible
experience.
4.
HE WENT TOO FAR FOR FURTHER EDUCATION I failed my A Levels for cricket. I stayed on at school
to take A Levels in Geography and Economics but I missed the
mocks because I was away in Australia with the English Young
Cricketers Tour. My Economics teacher told me not to bother.
I took them though. And failed them.
5.
HE WANTS IT ALL ON A PLATE
My ambition is to own a restaurant. I've got a big thing about
that. I've got this nice idea of waltzing in when I fancy
and being able to get a table and eat for nothing. My wife's
not so keen because it would be too much like hard work. The
atmosphere and the ambience would be the most important thing.
I might put a bit of cricket memorabilia up.
6.
HE WAS ONCE PLANE TERRIFIED
About ten years ago there used to be a little aeroplane that
went out from Southampton Airport to the Channel Islands.
It used to sound like a bomber. I went on one of these with
Hampshire and as we took off from Southampton, heading up
the run-way; it got caught in a cross wind and ended up right
off the runway and on the grass. It was juddering about so
much that the cabin door, separating us from the pilots, burst
open and we could see both pilots, sitting on the same chair,
pulling on the joystick. This caused some alarm.
