Guitarist's Guitarist

No stranger to these awards, Scunthorpe’s favourite son has previously pocketed an impressive range of gongs for best album, musician of the year, best original song and best trad track.

Nominated again for both the instrumentalist and album categories, 2014 could be the year that he scores the hat-trick in each.

In contrast to his previous album Purpose + Grace, his latest Vagrant Stanzas album is a totally solo effort displaying the full range of his talents on a blazing mix of trad, modern and self-composed material. The album was produced by his Sheffield neighbour - former Pulp guitarist and solo star Richard Hawley – who encouraged Martin to record both guitar (or banjo) and vocal live in order to capture the atmosphere of evenings spent swapping songs across the kitchen table.

That intimacy is sure to be reproduced in his Folk Awards performance - an undoubted highlight of this year's event.
