Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker present Peter Sellars鈥檚 staging of Bach鈥檚 St Matthew Passion for the first time in the UK. It鈥檚 a work that confronts suffering and torture as well as salvation and redemption in some of Bach鈥檚 most moving music. Mark Padmore鈥檚 Evangelist leads a starry cast that also includes celebrated German baritone Christian Gerhaher.

About this event

Sir Simon Rattle conducts Peter Sellars鈥檚 innovative staging of Bach鈥檚 St Matthew Passion. While the dramatic St John Passion (heard earlier this season) is all musical action and reaction, the St Matthew is altogether more contemplative 鈥� confronting suffering and torture as well as salvation and redemption in some of Bach鈥檚 most moving music.

A starry line-up of soloists is led by Mark Padmore鈥檚 Evangelist, and includes celebrated German baritone Christian Gerhaher singing the words of Christ.
