Ten Pieces is an exciting initiative for schools that aims to open up the world of classical music to a generation of young people.

Together with the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Philharmonic Orchestra, ´óÏó´«Ã½ Learning will be hosting a special Ten Pieces Live Lesson from MediaCityUK, presented by C´óÏó´«Ã½â€™s Naomi Wilkinson and Blur’s Alex James.

Naomi and Alex will also be joined by very special guests including composer Gabriel Prokofiev, four times world DJ champion Mr Switch, street artist Stik and poet Lemn Sissay MBE, Chancellor of Manchester University.

The Live Lesson focuses on three pieces from the Ten Pieces repertoire. It aims to inspire secondary students to develop their own creative responses to music through art, poetry and composition, whilst also highlighting key elements of the music curriculum.

The three pieces we are focusing on are:
• ‘Toreador Song’ from Bizet’s ‘Carmen Suite No. 2’ – Creative response through poetry
• Concerto for Turntables and Orchestra (5th movement) by Gabriel Prokofiev – Creative response through composition
• Symphony No. 10 (2nd movement) by Shostakovich – Creative response through art

Live Lessons are streamed live to classrooms across the UK through our website. We invite students and teachers to get involved by posing questions to our expert guests and by creating their own responses to the music.
We hope that the lesson will inspire students to get creative through classical music and get involved with the next stage of the Ten Pieces Secondary project. Early next year, we’ll be asking teachers to send in their pupils’ creative responses to be included on the Ten Pieces website, with the possibility of being showcased at a major celebratory finale in 2016.

Here’s how you can get involved…

We are offering limited free tickets for schools on a first come first serve basis to join our studio audience and take part in our Live Lesson. There will also be an opportunity for the audience to take part in a Q&A with the team. To register your interest in attending this special event please send an email to youlanda.daly@bbc.co.uk including:
• the number of pupils and staff who would like to attend (max. 35)
• the main school contact and the coordinator of your visit

Please be aware:
• We aim to accommodate up to 35 attendees including teachers per school as seats are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis
• All students MUST have parental permission to be filmed for the live stream. Unfortunately we will not be able to accommodate anyone who doesn’t have parental permission
• You will need to provide your own transport to and from the venue.
