Piano concertos don鈥檛 come more popular or romantic than Rachmaninov鈥檚 Second, forever enshrined in the public鈥檚 imagination as the soundtrack to 'Brief Encounter'. Stephen Hough is just the soloist to make it sound brand new, without losing a drop of its tightly wrought emotion.
Nuno Coelho conducts and opens with Dvo艡谩k's 'Othello' overture, the third in a triptych of overtures called 'Nature, Life and Love' and inspired by Shakespeare鈥檚 play. Jean Sibelius, meanwhile, found inspiration in the ancient myths of Finland鈥檚 Kalevala, portraying the life of the hero Lemmink盲inen with a timeless intensity, most hauntingly in the famous 'Swan of Tuonela'.
