In 2007 Craig Charles asked listeners to his Funk and Soul Show, ‘If you could choose a fantasy funk band, who would be in it?’ The response was so overwhelming that when it came to celebrating the 75th anniversary of the ´óÏó´«Ã½â€™s famous Maida Vale studios, Craig decided to try to bring all the musicians from the 2007 vote together to form the Fantasy Funk Band for a one-off session.
Craig was successful in his mission and the Fantasy Funk and Soul Band was born. Their one-off set turned out to be the first of many – they have gone on to play festivals such as Glastonbury and Big Chill, even returning to Maida Vale to play at 6 Music’s 10th Anniversary in 2012. Their performance at the Last Night ‘Proms in the Park’ is the conclusion of a busy summer which has included shows at the Mostly Jazz festival, and Fantasy Sunday in Bristol.
Today’s line-up includes: Mick Talbot on Hammond and Fender Rhodes (Style Council / Dexys Midnight Runners); Snowboy on Percussion (Lisa Stansfield); Mark Van der Gucht on Guitar (Galliano / The Blockheads); John Turrell on vocals (Smoove & Turrell); The Haggis Horns – Atholl Ransome on Saxophone and Flute (Jamiroquai and Amy Winehouse Horn section); Jim Corry on Tenor Saxophone (Jamiroquai and Amy Winehouse Horn section); Malcolm Strachan on Trumpet (Jamiroquai and Amy Winehouse Horn section); Ernie McKone on Bass (Push/ Candi Stanton); Mike Bandoni on Drums (Funkshone); Ria Currie on vocals (Speedometer).
