Three years after the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Philharmonic’s world premiere of The Immortal drew rapturous acclaim from critics and audiences, Mark Simpson, the orchestra’s Composer in Association, presents another brand-new work. Friends with Simpson since they were both ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 3 New Generation Artists from 2012 to 2014, superb young cellist Leonard Elschenbroich gives the premiere of this ´óÏó´«Ã½ Philharmonic commission, the centrepiece of a programme that also features Strauss’s redemptive tone-poem and Shostakovich’s staggering First Symphony – completed when the composer was just 18.
