Concert Information
Andrew Manze’s love of Baroque music is famous, and his revelatory cycle of Vaughan Williams symphonies has been a real highlight of recent ´óÏó´«Ã½ SSO seasons. Tonight he devotes his artistry and charisma to a different, very personal enthusiasm: the gloriously vibrant music of the great Swedish symphonist Wilhelm Stenhammar. Imagine the energy of Sibelius combined with the freshness and melody of Grieg, and you’ll get some idea of Stenhammar’s First Symphony. It’s a real rediscovery, and the ideal complement to Beethoven’s most brilliant Piano Concerto, played by Steven Osborne who, in this concert, concludes his acclaimed complete cycle with us.
