The opening to Brahms says it all: upper instruments straining to escape the downward pull and the heavy beat of the rest of the orchestra. This is a work about breaking free, and we鈥檒l follow that trajectory from first movement to last, where, symbolically, a horn call floats in from alpine peaks.
