Conductor John Wilson opens this afternoon of mainly light British classics with the overture from Sullivan’s rich and emotionally engaging operetta, The Yeomen of the Guard.

German’s Romeo and Juliet is the first of two pieces today that have love, and its complications, at the heart, before Coates’s retelling of the fairy-tale favourite, Cinderella, soars between dejection and despair to deliver the most magical of conclusions.

In more Coates, we hear a hint of the seaside in his swooning waltz, Dancing Nights, before Farnon revisits a childhood spent by the deep waters of the Canada-America border in Lake of the Woods.

A musical journey through London from Wood, taking in Nelson's Column, Tower Hill and Horse Guards, is particularly well remembered for the classic march from its final movement, Horse Guards, Whitehall - the signature tune used in Down your Way – a long running ´óÏó´«Ã½ radio programme.
