About this event

After the overture to the first important German Romantic opera, Weber鈥檚 take on the folk legend of a marksman鈥檚 contract with the devil, featured artist Alice Coote returns to tackle Mahler鈥檚 folk-influenced song-cycle, inspired by the conclusion of an unhappy love affair.

罢肠丑补颈办辞惫蝉办测鈥檚 Manfred, a full-length fusion of tone-poem and symphonic form, makes passionate use of Byron鈥檚 dramatic poem with supernatural elements which held so many 19th-century artists in thrall. This powerfully driven masterpiece is a favourite of tonight鈥檚 conductor.

Discover the Music Download a short audio guide published on the day about a key work in tonight鈥檚 Prom: Suzy Klein talks about Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen.
