About this concert
The orchestra鈥檚 Chief Conductor Designate, Ryan Wigglesworth, directs a concert steeped in folk traditions. Sir James MacMillan鈥檚 depiction of persecution and redemption in 17th century Scotland has become a modern classic since this orchestra gave its World Premiere in 1990. Christopher Rouse鈥檚 elegiac Flute Concerto, meanwhile, is also influenced by traditional Celtic music and was hailed as 鈥榓 masterpiece鈥 by 'The Herald.' Adam Walker is the soloist. And when 19th-century Czech listeners first experienced Dvo艡谩k鈥檚 Seventh they recognised the music of their homeland and heard it as a drama of national reawakening 鈥 but you don鈥檛 need Bohemian blood to be swept along by its passion and glorious melodies.
Please note that Marin Alsop has withdrawn from this concert. We are grateful to Ryan Wigglesworth for stepping in to conduct at short notice.
