Concert Information

To begin this afternoon, we are transported to the warmth of the Italian Riviera with Elgar’s overture inspired by a holiday there.

Walton's Cello Concerto, for which soloist Leonard Elschenbroich joins the orchestra, is full of warmth and colour. Written on the island of Ischia, from a scented garden high above the Mediterranean, Walton imagined a concerto that blossoms with song – and this most certainly delivers.

Strauss’s witty and abrasive depiction of an impish figure from German folklore ends this afternoon. One of his most popular tone poems, Till Eulenspiegel shows Strauss at his playful, joyous best - chronicling the misadventures and mischiefs of his prankster hero.
