A century after its invention, the theremin still sounds like it’s just dropped in from another planet. Carolina Eyck is the world’s leading exponent – and she’ll be making magic from thin air with a concerto written especially for her by Finnish composer Kalevi Aho. Composed by fellow Finn Outi Tarkiainen and premiered at the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Proms in August, Midnight Sun Variations celebrates the endless daylight of the Nordic summer, before John StorgÃ¥rds conducts a work with a very different inspiration: Shostakovich’s fiercely controversial 12th Symphony, dedicated to the memory of Lenin.
