Masterpieces from Schoenberg, Holst and Scriabin offer three very different portraits of 20th-century music in this concert by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Jurowski. Big tunes and vivid characterisation make Holst鈥檚 The Planets a perennial favourite, while Scriabin鈥檚 Prometheus is an eccentric musical experiment. Premiered at the Proms in 1912, Schoenberg鈥檚 Five Orchestral Pieces took tonality to a new limit.

20th-century music takes three contrasting paths here in masterpieces by Holst, Schoenberg and Scriabin.

Tuneful good humour and vivid characterisation see the century at its most approachable in Holst鈥檚 well-loved The Planets. Scriabin鈥檚 Prometheus is more eccentric 鈥� scored for piano, 鈥榗olour organ鈥� and orchestra. This performance of it includes the optional part for choir and responds to the composer鈥檚 imaginative ideas on colour.

Premiered at the Proms in 1912, Schoenberg鈥檚 Five Orchestral Pieces take tonality to the limit, anticipating the composer鈥檚 later development of serialism.
