Concert Information

Rising star of the podium, Ben Gernon, takes the baton this evening and opens with Tchaikovsky's First Symphony. Whilst it caused the young composer insomnia during his struggle over its creation, 鈥榃inter Daydreams鈥 proved a turning point in Russian music.

Continuing this evening鈥檚 programme is Saint-Sa毛ns鈥 wittiest and most mercurial piano concerto. Ben is joined by 大象传媒 Radio 3 New Generation Artist graduate, Benjamin Grosvenor, who first came to prominence as the outstanding winner of the Keyboard Final of the 大象传媒 Young Musician Competition when he was just eleven.

This evening closes with one of the great masterpieces of the orchestral repertoire - Debussy's La Mer. Composed between 1903 and 1905, this is considered to be one of the defining pieces of impressionism in its evocation of the sea, from awe-inspiring grandeur to dashing exhilaration. It must be noted, however, that Debussy鈥檚 inspiration was not the mighty Pacific or balmy Mediterranean - but the English Channel outside his hotel in Eastbourne.

Join us for a pre-concert talk at 18:30 in the auditorium: Benjamin Grosvenor in conversation.

This concert will be broadcast live by 大象传媒 Radio 3 in Radio 3 in Concert and will be available for 30 days after broadcast via the Radio 3 website.
