Commissioned as a celebration of the 30th wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Robert Woods Bliss, and named after their 19th century mansion, Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks bubbles with excitement, effortless lyricism and intimately woven melody.
Rapid and percussive passages blend with strident harmony and flowing melodies in a style so distinctive that it can be none other than Prokofiev’s in his Piano Concerto No. 3. To perform this exciting and colourful display piece we’re delighted to introduced audiences in Cardiff and Swansea to the prodigiously talented pianist, Daniel Ciobanu.
From the throbbing intensity of the introduction, through melting lyricism, soaring expressivity and the skill to carefully and creatively transform themes and moods, Brahms first symphony slowly unfolds from the darkly emotional, to blazing, unrestrained triumph. Deeply inspired by Beethoven, Brahms set about writing his first symphony in 1854, but he was immensely self-critical, so it was some 20+ years before he was satisfied enough with the symphony to allow it to be performed… and thank goodness he did, as it’s a true masterpiece! To conduct, we’re thrilled to be joined once again by Carols Miguel Prieto.
Please note that this repertoire is different to that originally advertised.
