Luke Wright - On Barrow
Luke Wright - On Barrow
16:30 Sun 27 Sep 2020 Barrow
The Forum, Barrow, 大象传媒 Radio 4 and 大象传媒 Sounds

Luke Wright discovers more about Barrow through the eyes of the poets who鈥檝e been inspired by this coastal industrial town.

Barrow propelled itself onto the map 150 years ago after the discovery of iron ore transformed Barrow-the-fishing-village, into a frontier town of the industrial revolution, earning it the title of The Chicago of the North.

William Wordsworth was no stranger to Furness Abbey 鈥 鈥渁 mouldering Pile鈥 and 鈥渉oly Scene鈥 of The Prelude 鈥 and across the water to Piel Castle鈥

And this huge Castle, standing here sublime,
I love to see the look with which it braves,
Cased in the unfeeling armour of old time,
The lightning, the fierce wind, the trampling waves.

Speaking to Barrow Poets Kim Moore and Kate Davis, Luke explores Barrow through those who walk in Wordsworth鈥檚 footsteps 鈥 alongside Yorkshire poet Kate Fox, bringing her own experience and work to reflect on this coastal town.

The programme, titled Contains Strong Language Live, is on 大象传媒 Radio 4 at 16:30 on Sunday 27 September, and available on 大象传媒 Sounds.

Presented as part of a triple bill at Contains Strong Language, along with Kate Fox - Bigger on the Inside (17:20) and Luke Wright's other show, Better Off (18:20)
