The A-Z of Secret Agents

A is for... Austin Powers. The International Man of Mystery most recently seen in "Goldmember". Oo-er.

B is for... Bond. Who else?

C is for... Chuck Barris, gameshow host and CIA hitman in "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind".

D is for... Daphne Honeybutt. Babs Windsor played the trainee spook in "Carry On Spying", complete with a photographic memory and camera-shutter eyes.

E is for... Emmett Fitz-Hume. This incompetent agent was played by Chevy Chase in the unfunny "Spies Like Us".

F is for... Derek Flint. Austin Powers' favourite spy, James Coburn's laconic agent had two outings, "Our Man Flint" and "In Like Flint".

G is for... George Kaplan. The secret agent Cary Grant is mistaken for in "North By Northwest". qv: K

H is for... Matt Helm. Droopy-eyed Dean Martin portrayed this lounge-lizard super spy. Only interesting fact: the four Matt Helm movies all had titles that bore no relation to their plot.

I is for... Illya Kuryakin. The blond-haired Russian (played by David McCallum) was one of the men from U.N.C.L.E. - the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement. qv: N.

J is for... Jason Bourne. Amnesiac agent played by Matt Damon, who slowly remembers who he is in 2002's "The Bourne Identity".

K is for... Eve Kendall. Hitch's blonde in "North By Northwest" flirts with Cary Grant, but is she working for the good guys or the bad guys? qv: G.

L is for... Lawrence Fassett. John Hurt is creepy spy Fassett, manipulating Rutger Hauer in Sam Peckinpah's final film, "The Osterman Weekend".

M is for... Modesty Blaise. More Swinging London lunacy in yet another camp 60s spy spoof, this time based on a newspaper cartoon strip. Monica Vitti starred in the original; Miramax is making the cheapo "My Name Is Modesty: A Modesty Blaise Adventure" to retain the film rights.

N is for... Napoleon Solo. The American Man From U.N.C.L.E. (played by Robert Vaughn), frequently battling the evil T.H.R.U.S.H. (that's Technological Hierachy for the Removal of Undesirables and Subjugation of Humanity, since you ask). qv: I

O is for... Andy Osnard. Pierce Brosnan is James... er, Andy Osnard, in John Boorman's distinctly non-Bond spy thriller, "The Tailor of Panama".

P is for... Harry Palmer. Who else? Michael Caine's bespectacled, unglamorous agent had three outings in the 60s. His two, little seen excursions in the 90s are best (and easily) forgotten.

Q is for... Quiller. Yet another 60s spy, this time played by George Segal. Adapted by Harold Pinter, no less, from the first of Adam Hall's many Quiller novels, "The Quiller Memorandum" (1966) was the only one to make it onto the big screen.

R is for... Jack Ryan. Tom Clancy's all-American hero Jack Ryan has been played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford (twice) and, most recently, Ben Affleck in "The Sum of All Fears".

S is for... George Smiley. Alec Guinness made John Le Carre's spy master famous on TV but Smiley does crop up on the big screen in 1965's "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold", played by Rupert Davies.

T is for... Harry Tasker. Harry's wife thinks he's a computer salesman. Big mistake. Arnie and Jamie Lee Curtis star in James Cameron's comic 1994 spy flick "True Lies", based on French movie "La Totale!".

U is for... Undercover Brother. Eddie Griffin is the secret agent battling The Man in this Blaxploitation spoof.

V is for... Vijay. When James Bond goes to India in "Octopussy", he hooks up with local agent Vijay, played by minor tennis star Vijay Amritraj. Amritraj got the movie bug after his brief role, going on to 'star' in, er, "Nine Deaths of the Ninja".

W is for... Harriet M Welsch, aka "Harriet the Spy". Young Harriet finds herself in a whole load of trouble when she starts spying on friends and neighbours.

X is for... Xander Cage. Extreme sports freak-turned-government spook, Vin Diesel tried being a Bond in last year's "xXx".

Y is for... Young Basil Exposition. OK, we're struggling a bit here, but Austin Powers' boss makes a youthful appearance in "Goldmember".

Z is for... Zed. Protecting the Earth from the scum of the universe are the Men in Black. Don't forget the top man in the extra-terrestrial, extra-secret service.
