Delightful old-fashioned, aromatic plants topped by loose spikes of flowers like a series of loose pompons threaded onto stalks from which lipped flowers emerge on short tubes. The plants are perfect fillers for cottage gardens and natural planting schemes where their rather lax character looks at home, and the floppy stems can be supported if necessary with a few bushy pea sticks. Otherwise grow in heavily planted borders where other plants hold them upright. Their long flowering season lasts from midsummer into autumn. Highly attractive to bees and other insects, this charming plant is best grown in a sunny site with free-draining soil and some shelter.
