FACTS
Until
a disastrous fire gutted the house in 1936, Witley Court could
claim to be one of the finest stately homes in the country
Edward
Elgar's father, William Henry Elgar, was a musician and piano
tuner and went regularly to Witley Court to tune the instruments
there
The
spectacular ruin Witley Court is currently in the guardianship of
English Heritage but has been owned by the Wigington family for
over half a century.
It's
hoped a new owner might even restore the building to its former
glory.
In
the past Witley Court has been given more than three quarter of
a million pounds to restore its famous fountains.
The
renowned water-feature dates back to the 19th century and stands
in the heart of the estate's gardens.
Over
the past 12 months, English Heritage have been carrying out work
to restore the gardens to something of their former glory.
