When
The Play What I Wrote opened in London every show was a sell-out and
it won every major award.
Its a celebration of Britain’s greatest comedy duo, Morecambe and
Wise
The plot echoes the lives of Eric and Ernie, without being a straight
forward biography.
Ben has written a play, an epic set in the French Revolution, called
A Tight Squeeze for the Scarlet Pimple and he wants to see it staged.
Joe, on the other hand, wants them to continue with their double act,
even though they haven't worked for two years.
He believes that if they perform a tribute to Morecambe and Wise,
Ben’s confidence will be restored and the double act will go on.
But first, Joe needs to persuade a guest star to appear in the play
what Ben wrote… and this gives the play is clever twist.
The show has a surprise celebrity guest star at every performance.
So far guest stars have included Roger Moore, Kylie Minogue, Joanna
Lumley, Will Young, Dawn French, Nigel Havers, Ralph Fiennes and Sting.
It's a closely guarded secret who the guests will be during the run
at Malvern.
Casting for comedy
The shows stars Joseph Alessi, Ben Keaton & Toby Sedgwick.
Ben Keaton’s television credits include Father Austin Purcell in Father
Ted and Spencer in Casualty.
He was awarded the prestigious Perrier Award for Intimate Matters
of an Irish Taxidermist and starred with Joseph Alessi and Toby Sedgwick
in the Marx Brothers musical, Animal Crackers receiving an Olivier
Award nomination for Best Actor in a musical.
Joseph’s recent theatre credits include Puck in A Midsummer Night’s
Dream.
Toby Sedgwick founded The Moving Picture Mime Company and has performed
with them across the globe.
The Play What I Wrote was written and created by Hamish McColl, Sean
Foley and Eddie Braben.
McColl and Foley together known as The Right Size, won the Laurence
Olivier Award for Best Comedy.
Eddie Braben is, without a doubt, Morecambe and Wise’s greatest scriptwriter,
having worked with them for fourteen years, during which time he won
five ‘Writer of the Year’ awards and a BAFTA. |
