About This Site > Project History How the site worked: Site moderationWhen the site launched in June 2003 it was in 'pre-moderated' mode. This meant that each message and story that was added to the site was read by a moderator and deleted if it contravened the House Rules. The site eventually went into 'post-moderated' mode, which meant the moderators only read messages if other users of the site had complained about them by clicking a button labelled 'Alert the moderators'. All images were in pre-moderation throughout the project. This meant that an image would only become visible on the site after it had been seen and passed by a moderator. If the moderator thought the copyright of a particular image was questionable, the contributor would be contacted by email. The image would be published or discarded after a conversation with the contributor. If the contributor did not respond to the email, the questionable image was not published. By registering on the site, all users promised to comply with the site's Terms and Conditions, and House Rules. Content that broke these rules was removed from the site.
