MY MATES

A HELMET ROLLED IN THE DUST AT NORMANDY
I TURNED MY HAED AND LOOKED AROUND
THERE WAS BILL, SPREAD ACROSS THE GROUND
I SAW JACK STUMBLE AND FALL
ALL CURLED UP JUST LIKE A BALL
I YELLED "GET UP" BUT HE LAY QUITE STILL
WE BURRIED HIS BODY ALONGSIDE BILL
SAM WAS NEXT, HE COPPED IT REALLY BAD
NONE OF US THERE COULD SAVE THE LAD
MUST I GO ON, THE LIST IS QUITE LONG
TOO MANY LIVES ALL GONE FOR A SONG
NOT TO WORRY, YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY
SOLDIERS DONT DIE, THEY JUST FADE AWAY
WHO WAS IT SAID "NOT TO REASON WHY"
AND TOLD MY MATES IT WAS TIME THEY SHOULD DIE
HOW CAN I REMEMBER AND NEVER REGRET
HOW CAN I SURVIVE AND EVER FOREGET ?

Message 1 - Mates

Posted on: 30 October 2003 by Frank Mee Researcher 241911

The sun shines down as we move to cover,
For some the day will soon be over
An instinctive duck as we hear the round,
To late for my mate laying on the ground
Get up you yell and carry on,
We know it's too late for he has gone
To a soldiers valhalla in the sky,
Those left behind are wondering why
We will always have the guilt to carry,
For all our mates old Tom, Dick and Harry
Doing this we keep memory still alive,
Seeing their faces remember why they died.

What soldier in any war never wondered, why him and not me and who does not feel guilty about being here still when they all died so young. It was not in our hands to alter any of it, your memories are their enternity.
Frank Mee.
